Matchbook magazine (if you haven't subscribed yet, I highly recommend it) features the most gorgeous orange nail polish in their recent issue.

The color is Orange Fizz, and you can purchase it here. I like that it's bright, but not garish. The slight pink undertones keep it from overwhelming the rest of your beauty routine. Definitely a perfect spring color.

The Honeymooner

I love collections with charming stories. Lauren Moffatt's spring collection, entitled The Honeymooner, presents itself quite simply as "The Honeymooner and what she packed". This collection, in my opinion, just sings spring. The bright colors, floral prints, straw boaters, and platformed sandals are the perfect mix of ladylike with a touch of quirk. Overall, the collection is perfectly elegant and emits the sort of soft beauty and optimism of a newlywed.

Design Your Own Dress

I'm always excited to learn about new developments in fashion. After all, as an industry, fashion is all about change. New designers, shapes, fabrics, media - the list goes on and on.

Bespoke fashion, or custom made clothing, is making a come back following the economic recession with an increased focus on quality of purchases. Mary Huang, an interactive designer, has released a new application called “Continuum” which gives anyone the chance to create their own garments.

According to Huang, the future of consumer products doesn’t just lie in more advanced technologies and materials, but also in the reevaluation of the conventional supply chain. Garments can be made to order in your exact measurements, exactly to a consumer's specification.

At the moment, Huang has created a prototype of the software as well as a few examples of dresses. With the help of Kickstart financing, she plans to finish the software and website and set up production to make the physical dresses and deliver them. Is this the future of fashion?

Walking on Sunshine

I caved and bought my fifth pair of Converse sneakers today. In my defense, they were half off and I kind of, sort of, needed walking shoes for a trip I'm taking this week...

In all seriousness though, there's a reason I'm a Converse (semi)addict. They're more stylish than a pair of running shoes, hold up to daily wear and tear, and fit my narrow feet well. With the exception of my gold sequined pair (another amazing sale find), my other pairs are all rather neutral. I have a black, royal blue, and pale blue pair. And since the gold sequined pair are a bit more delicate and best reserved for special occasions, I'm really excited to add this bright pair to my closet!

GO Target!

The clothes section of Target is deadly. It seems that every time I stop by to pick up shampoo or a DVD, the racks of affordable clothing draw me in only to forget why I'm at the store in the first place. Target’s GO International collections have been particularly difficult to resist. After all, designer dresses and affordable are rarely in the same sentence. As a celebration of the 5th year anniversary of the collaborations, Target has re-released a 34-piece collection featuring dresses from 17 of the previous designers.

One of my favorite pieces from the collection is this navy Tucker frock. I love the demure boat neck which perfectly balances the scoop back and short hemline. The longer sleeves are very ladylike as well. My favorite detail though is the charming ruffle on the back. Worn with simple flats or dressed up with trendy accessories, this is the perfect LND (little navy dress).

Lovely Liberty

Any lover of prints would find themselves in heaven inside Liberty & Co.'s London shop on Regent St. The store has a well known reputation for fashionable homewares and eclectic designs. Liberty of London, an accessories brand associated with the shop, is also recognized for its recent high profile collaboration with Target in early 2010. The shop today is a destination within itself, filled with an array of fashion, cosmetics, accessories, gifts, and furniture.

When it comes to spring accessories, Liberty has created a darling set of knot watches featuring a number of their trademark prints.

Bright Blooms

Yellow is one of my favorite colors. And orange is quickly making a case for the second spot. Combined with pink, these three colors have always been one of my favorite warm color palettes.

Now that spring has arrived and flowers are blooming, I've been thinking more about my favorite flowers, gerbera daisies. And what did I realize? Why, they're yellow, orange, and pink! Hard to tell which I loved first, so we'll just say I've been drawn to both all along.

Bottega Veneta Fall 2011

I know Milan Fashion Week was ages ago by the standard of time of the fashion world, but I keep finding myself musing about this collection. I love the ladylike silhouettes and of course the pops of color were appreciated. You can see Tomas Maier's experiments with textures throughout the collection, though some were much more successful than others. Here are a few of my favorite looks.

I love the bold orange hue matched with equally outrageous textures. How fun is that bag?

This sleek draped dress is accented perfectly by the lace detailing.

Two very similar looks, both equally beautiful. I like that there's a sort of dark mystery despite the refined, ladylike construction of the outfit. It's amazing the story that textures can tell.

When it comes to the perfect hat for spring, I'm convinced a straw fedora is the answer to the seasonal topper dilemma. The classic shape of the fedora, reworked in a lighter, breezier material is perfect for the transition into spring. I'm envisioning these hats paired with Breton striped tops, cropped trousers, and white sneakers for a preppy look. They'd be equally cute with a flirty sundress, pair of sandals, and bangles to channel a boho chic vibe.

Freshly Neutral

While I have a seemingly endless obsession with bright colors and loud prints, I like to think that there's a more refined, elegant side that appreciates quiet neutrals just as thoroughly.

Not only does this shot have me craving ice cream, but it also reminds me that subtle colors (here a pale pink and yellow) look gorgeous paired with neutral counterparts. The result is very refreshing, but not bland. I think an outfit pulled with three of the above colors in mind would look stunning now, but incorporating more brown and yellow would work just as well in the fall. Who knew you could find style inspiration in food?

A Bright New Look

Color Blocking and Brights, Oh My!

I can't get enough of Zara's lookbook styling. The iterations on the color blocking trend are so effortless, yet eye-catching. I love the bright, citrus colors and the warm, sunny feeling they bring to the outfit. The jumper balances out the short hem of the skirt, but the loose knit keeps it from looking too stuffy.

Unrelated to color blocking, but to its credit still bright, how neat is this necklace? It's handcrafted in Ghana as part of the Bluma Project. I like the playfulness of the beads and fun tie, but it's not juvenile. It's the sort of necklace that can dress up or down an outfit, and unique to boot.

Apple Cinnamon Muffins

Last year, I managed to bake 9 dozen cupcakes in less than a month. This inspired a sort of unofficial mantra, "Every occasion is an occasion to bake." A month later found me singing a slightly different tune while baking 10 dozen cupcakes in one night (this time there was an actual event in need of dessert...), but I'm still great at seizing every opportunity to bust out a muffin tin.

This week, I decided to opt for a muffin instead of my customary cupcakes. After deciding on cinnamon as the spice of choice, I spotted some green apples and decided to go a traditional route.

To keep the muffins from being too plain, I made a quick brown sugar and cinnamon topping. This slightly caramelized in the oven, giving the final product a sweet, crunchy top.

As for excuses to bake, I decided to whip up this batch of apple cinnamon muffins on Thursday. Flash forward to Friday afternoon, and they've all been given away or eaten. How do I interpret this? Only as another reason to bring out the muffin tin again...

Apple Cinnamon Muffins

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt
1 T. cinnamon
3/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup melted butter

1 egg, slightly beaten

1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup milk
1 cup finely chopped apples

Directions

Heat oven to 375°F.

Combine flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in medium bowl. In a large bowl, beat the sugar and melted butter. Add the egg and vanilla and beat just until mixed. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk, stirring just until mixed (do not over mix). Fold in the apples, then spoon batter into muffin liners. Bake 18-23 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes.

Hoop the Loop

Like most other aspects of my life, when it comes to interior design I'm all about color and bright prints. Despite this, I've always viewed wallpaper as too fussy, and love finding alternative ways to bring a bit of cheer to a room.

While you could frame rectangular fabric swatches, I love this playful take using wooden embroidery hoops. The circular shapes remind me of fanciful bubbles floating up the wall, exploding in a rainbow of colors and patterns.

Embroidery hoops are available at most craft stores and are relatively inexpensive. Best of all, they're lightweight and a breeze to hang (no searching for studs!).

Aww, Fudge

When you realize how easy this fudge is to make, you'll literally find yourself muttering "Aww, fudge." Fortunately, you can then console yourself with a square of this deceptively easy confection. Because of its simplicity, it's an extremely adaptable recipe. For St. Patrick's Day, you could substitute peppermint extract for the vanilla for a perfect treat.

Ingredients:

1 lb Powdered sugar
1/2 c. Cocoa
1/4 tsp Salt
1/4 c. Milk
1 Tbsp. Vanilla extract
1/2 c. Butter
1 c. Nuts, minced

Directions:

In a microwaveable 8x8 glass pan, combine the sugar, cocoa, salt, milk and vanilla. Stir together until partially blended (I like to use a fork).
Lay the butter in the center of dish. Microwave at high for 2 min. Don't worry if all the butter hasn't melted, it will as you stir. Be sure to scrape down the sides and then add the nuts.
Refrigerate for at least an hour in the refrigerator before cutting into squares.

Typography

When I was in middle school, I discovered the joys of Photoshop and it's more simple cousin, Paintshop Pro. I would spend hours messing around with the design tools, trying to keep my mouse steady enough to create something besides a pixelated, rough mess. Of course, I'm far from becoming a graphic designer, but I have a greater appreciation for digital designs as a result. When I came across this typography work, I was instantly floored. I love the creative merge of a functional object (a recipe) and and art. The 70s concert poster vibe is rather charming as well.

I think this would be a cheeky decoration for a kitchen, even if it's far easier to read the recipe off the back of a bag of chocolate chips...

The Perfect Trench

Is there anything more chic than sipping your morning cup of tea or latte at an outdoor cafe while decked out in a trench coat? When it comes to trench coats Burberry is the quintessential brand. However, as such a coat remains a purely aspirational addition to my closet, I love my London Fog version. It's amazing how throwing a trench over the simplest of ensembles (skinny jeans and a tee, a floral dress, etc.) instantly adds a bit of glamor.

Pancake Day

Depending where you're presently located, today has a number of names: Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday. But my absolute favorite comes from the UK where Pancake Day is celebrated. Traditionally, the Brits mark the last day before Lent by indulging in rich foods, specifically the milk, eggs, and butter found in pancakes. While in the states, pancakes are usually topped with syrup and fruit, the Brits prefer lemon and sugar.

Pancake Day Pancakes (Adapted from BBC Food)

Ingredients
1 cup plain flour, sifted
Pinch of salt
2 eggs
1 scant cup milk mixed with 1/3 cup water
1/4 cup butter
Caster sugar
Lemon juice
Lemon wedges

Directions
1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets an airing. Make a well in the flour and break the eggs into it. Begin whisking the eggs, incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.
2. Gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture and continue to whisk (don't forget to scrape down the bowl). Melt the butter and add 2 tbsp to the batter. The remaining butter will be used to grease the frying pan.
3. Warm the pan on high heat, then turn the heat down to medium. Spoon 2 tbsp of batter into the pan and quickly tip the pan from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. The pancakes will cook quickly, so flip when the edges appear browned when lifted with a fork (about 30 seconds). Flip the pancake over, the other side will need a few seconds only, then slide onto a plate.
4. To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or you can roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon.

French Toast

How to make a Monday more bearable? Why, starting with a delicious breakfast. Trust me, it's completely worth waking up an extra half hour early. I know Sunday is traditionally the morning of large, lazy brunches, but there's no better way to jump back into the week than fueled with a tasty mix of fruit and carbs. Since Lent begins this week, why not start the week with a breakfast appropriate last hurrah to sweets? May I present, chocolate french toast.

Chocolate French Toast (via Cooking Cache)
Ingredients

3 eggs
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon of sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon of salt
12 slices day old bread, crusts removed
3 milk chocolate candy bars* (1.55 ounces each), halved
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
confectioner's sugar

Directions
1. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Pour half into an ungreased 13x9x2 inch baking dish.
2. Arrange six slices of bread in a single layer over egg mixture. Place one piece of chocolate in the center of each piece of bread. Top with remaining bread; pour remaining egg mixture over all. Let stand for 5 minutes. 3. In a large nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Fry sandwiches until golden brown on both sides. Dust with confectioner's sugar. Cut sandwiches diagonally; serve warm.

Mary's Scarves

About a week ago, I wrote about Mary Katrantzou's A/W 2011 collection. Of course, like most other items shown on London Fashion Week's runways, her collection is significantly out of my price range. With this in mind, my delight at hearing that Mary Katrantzou had designed two silk scarves for Topshop hardly needs explanation.

I'm glad to see Mary Katrantzou's gorgeous prints splashed across as many mediums as possible. Factor in the high street prices, and I'm sold.

Tea for Three

While Jessica Simpson has more or less dropped off the celebrity radar, I do remember hearing she had branched out to fashion design. Being a celebrity designed collection, I had low expectations and generally didn't pay much attention to her pieces. I happened to come across her spring dresses and I can't help but admire the sweet creations.

My current orange kick is rather well documented here, but how gorgeous is this geometric poppy print? The buttons on the skirt give the otherwise girly dress a bit of quirk. (Jessica Simpson, $148)

This is my favorite of the collection. I love the demure tea-dress length, and the graduated print is sweet. Not to mention the smocking at the waist gives it a super flattering shape. (Jessica Simpson, $128)

I really like the colors of this dress. I'm not crazy about the ruffle at the waist, but the applique detail at the hem is divine! (Jessica Simpson, $148)

I'd love to wear any (or all?) of these to high tea or a garden party. Perfect for spring.

Converse and Marimekko

It's no secret I love bold bright prints. I also have a slight Converse obsession (I even own a sequined gold pair... words cannot describe how amazing they are). So you can only imagine my delight, no extreme euphoria, when I heard about the collaboration between Marimekko, the incredible Finnish textile design house, and Converse, the classically quirky American shoe brand.

For those unfamiliar with the brand, Marimekko was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia. Armi asked some artist friends to apply their graphic designs to textiles. The fabric was then made into a collection of simple dresses. Jacqueline Kennedy, ever the purveyor of style, made the line famous in the United States when she wore eight Marimekko dresses during the 1960 presidential campaign. Today, Marimekko is known for its bright, cheery prints appearing on a range of clothing and home furnishings.

ASOS Shift Dresses

Realistically, it will still be another month until that fantasy becomes reality, but in my daydreams I'm wearing these light, draped skirts.

Prime Prints: Jonathan Saunders Fall 2011

While many designers excel at prints, London Fashion Week seemed to have more than its fair share of talent. While my overall impression of Jonathan Saunder's Fall 2011 collection was a bit underwhelming, his print placement was spot on. I'm still astonished how the bright colors almost seem, well, restrained.

I love the unconventional orange and turquoise pairing that quite accurately bridges summer and fall. I know the cardigan is menswear, but the combination of the color and print makes it seriously covetable.

I love the blouse on the right and the skirt of the dress on the left. Who am I kidding, I love the skirt on the right as well... just not the head-to-toe styling. The waist defining silhouette of both looks is incredibly figure flattering, and the flutter sleeves and length are ladylike and elegant. At the same time, the fun print and unexpected colors keep the look very youthful and fun.

This final look doesn't showcase Saunders' prints, but I love the juxtaposition of the flirty hemline and large, graphic overlay. Very minimalist and modern.

Mary Katrantzou Fall 2011

One of my favorite collections from London Fashion Week was Mary Katrantzou's incredible rendition of prints. Her collection was once again inspired by interior decor, though this time it felt as if Katrantzou had picked up the objects, ranging from Fabergé eggs to Ming vases, and magically turned them into fabric. While a stiff silhouette prevailed throughout most of the show, softer fabrics made a debut. Above all, the focus was on the vibrant prints, which transfixed my attention from the first to last look.

I love the soft, but vibrant colors, and the couture shapes.

The skirts of these two looks are a bit more wearable in their fluidity. The sleeves of the top are a nice touch, adding a note of femininity while emphasizing the structure of the collection.

For good measure, the New York Times described it as "an object lesson in inspiration.... Rising designers always have a “breakthrough” moment — and this was the season when the designer’s sculptural vision created a collection of startling beauty." All in all, a gorgeous collection that definitely was a standout of London Fashion Week.

When I came across this image, I knew the previous Outfit Inspiration post would become a running feature. Sometimes I draw inspiration from entire outfits. Sometimes, like today's image, a small segment captures my attention and immediately results in a "Could I recreate that?" internal dialogue.

I immediately focus on the soft, feminine color palette of this image. While I love color, sometimes a neutral rich outfit is more attention grabbing. The combination of the sweet flats and dainty, scalloped edge skirt is simply charming. While I wouldn't normally consider a bicycle to be an accessory (well, except for this one), here it perfectly rounds out the other elements of the outfit.

Hot Pants

When I first saw Zara's latest collection of trousers, the phrase that came to mind was "hot pants". No, not the tiny shorts that really could bear an extra inch or two of fabric. When I see the vibrant hues of these pants, well, "hot" is exactly the word that comes to mind.

I love the variety of fits and colors and the casual styling. Bright pants are a loud addition to any outfit, so I'd suggest pairing them with a neutral top and solid shoes to balance the overall effect. Add a fun bag, a pair of sunglasses, and some bangles and you're set for spring!

Craftily Resourceful

I've been in a crafty mood lately and have had to suppress numerous whims to drop everything and rush to the nearest art supply store. The great thing about crafting is that it truly encourages a whole range of creativity. And luckily, that includes a range of supplies. In fact, some of the best projects are those that involve recycling (or upcycling) ordinary materials. After seeing some amazing jewelry stalls at a market this weekend, I've been itching to get back to work making wearable pieces. Fortunately, until I can make a trip to pick up beads, chain, and wire, these lovely crafts will tide me over.

First, these lovely fabric necklaces have their humble beginnings as regular cotton t-shirts. I especially love the colors here. I'm excited to experiment with printed shirts as well. Don't want to sacrifice any of your t-shirts? Check out a thrift shop for cheap shirts (go for large sizes, they'll give you more material to work with).

These bracelets can be made out of a variety of materials: fabric, leather, even shoelaces! Making bracelets always reminds me of Girl Scouts and summer camp. While perfecting your technique, why not make an extra or two for friends?

Remixed Raspberry

While ruminating over yesterday's ode to raspberries, I came across this lovely top. While the bold stripes and flowing construction scream summer, the rich color of the stripes makes this a perfectly versatile top now through the fall. First, the top:

This time of year, I'd pair the top with a pair of dark wash skinny jeans and a thin black belt. I'd keep the shoes simple, with a pair of basic black flats or pumps, and focus on accessorizing with a statement necklace. I love geometric patterns of this necklace, as well as the way it subtly pulls a rainbow of colors into the outfit. Unique necklaces can drastically alter the overall look, so a blouse looks fresh with repeated wearings.

In the summer, I'd balance the breeziness of the top with crisp white shorts. The gold zipper detailing lends an element of toughness to the look, and also ties in gold jewelry. Also, an added bonus: because of the decorative front of the shorts, a belt isn't necessary (though you could tie on a thin brown leather belt if it suited your fancy). The brown wedges elongate the leg, and while a bit dressier than flip flops, are still comfortable enough to wear all day. Of course, wearing your finest jewelry at the beach or pool isn't advised, so accessorize with an inexpensive set of mixed bangles that ties together the raspberry and gold notes of the outfit.

When it comes to desserts, I've yet to meet a dish I didn't immediately like. I'm especially partial to ice creams and their cousin, sorbet. And if that sorbet happens to be raspberry, well... what's not to love? The smooth texture, brilliant color, and refreshingly sweet taste make for a spoon-worthy dessert.

Silk Scarves and Shirts

Yesterday I spent the afternoon exploring/poking around a few markets and when not overly distracted by the incredible smells of the food stalls, found all sorts of inspiration. There were a fair number of stalls selling vintage and vintage-inspired clothing. They ranged from racks of bargain sweaters and 80s dresses to well curated collections of lace blouses and leather belts.

One of my favorites included a simple rack of collared shirts, which I initially passed over. On second glance, each oxford had a coordinated silk scarf tied around the neck. The effect of the fully buttoned shirt coupled with the scarf reminded me a bit of a school uniform, but with a more sophisticated edge. Unfortunately, I couldn't take pictures of the stall and its contents, though I'm now on a quest to find some cheery scarves to try the look out for myself this spring.

D&G showed a similar sort of styling in their Fall 2010 collection. The black and white palette could easily be updated for spring with a bright colored button down and scarf. Here, the models sported silk scarves tied into bows, but the ends could also be left undone for a different look. I love how scarves can inject so much personality into a look. From sophisticated florals to playful polka dots, chic geometric designs to whimsical animal prints, the simple accessory can add so much depth to an outfit.

Orange Occasions: Tangerine Cheesecake Ice Cream

After yesterday's post, I think I should just declare orange week. One of my favorite food blogs, Modern Comfort Food, coincidentally wrote about a dreamy tangerine cheesecake ice cream. This recipe touches upon two of my current obsessions: bright colors and warm weather. At the same time, I'm not the type to turn down ice cream, even in winter. It is citrus season after all...

Tangerine Cheesecake Ice Cream (Modern Comfort Food)

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups tangerine (or, if you prefer, orange) juice
2 cups milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons corn starch
2 egg yolks
6 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon or orange zest
(Optional) 1 teaspoon citrus-flavored liqueur (such as Grand Marnier)

Preparation

In a large sauce pan, bring the tangerine juice to a boil on high heat and cook until it has reduced in volume to 1 1/2 cups. Lower the heat to medium-low, stir in the milk, and heat the mixture until it just reaches the simmer point.
While the juice and milk are heating and in a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, corn starch, cheese, and egg yolks until very well blended. Whisking continuously, gradually add two cups of the hot juice/milk mixture to the sugar mixture until well blended. Drizzle this mixture into the juice/milk in the saucepan, whisking continuously, and heat on medium-low for approximately five minutes or until the mixture thickens. Remove from burner and stir in the zest and the optional liqueur, if the latter is used.
Chill the mixture in the refrigerator until very cold, preferably overnight.
When fully chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Makes approximately 8 one-cup servings.

Orange Crush: Sass & Bide Fall 2011

Bright orange is predicted to be a popular shade this spring, and I'm excited to see notes of the hue carrying over into fall collections. Normally orange emerges in the colder months coupled with brown and sage greens. I was pleased to see Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke designed a very orange fall 2011 collection for their label Sass & Bide. They paired bright orange with pops of magenta, lemon, gray, and brown, without an overt citrus effect. While the collection struck me as more summer than fall, I could see the individual pieces broken up and incorporated into a more cool weather ensemble. Some of my favorite looks:

Here, bright orange looks gorgeous as both the bodice and skirt of dresses when paired with a range of pink hues.

I love the petal detail as both a blouse and skirt. Again, orange is paired with pink, but shades of brown and pale peach also break up the bold color.

While orange only appears as an accessory, I love the silhouette and print of this dress. Perfect for summer and fall.

Outfit Inspiration: Florals and Belts

Sometimes I draw inspiration from entire outfits. And sometimes it's just a little segment that captures my attention and immediately results in a "Could I recreate that?" internal dialogue.

I'm not much of a belt person, unfortunately. I think they look amazing on others, and I'm always trying to tie them around outfits, only to pull them off after my unsuccessful attempts to style them. I always find the belt is either too large and won't stay around my waist, and when I try to move it to my hips it just draws unflattering attention to the area. Downfall of being slightly pear shaped I suppose. I do like how the blouse is loosely tucked in here. I think it prevents the belt from drawing too much attention, which might be just the solution. I also love the rolled sleeves. I often roll the sleeves on plaid and striped button downs, but perhaps because of this floral print, this particular iteration is very fresh.

Let the experiments begin :)

Well, not that Oscar. It's hard to be in the mindset for New York Fashion Week's fall ready to wear collections while waiting so impatiently for spring, but beautiful clothes are season-less.

Oscar de la Renta is known for his classic silhouettes and feminine detailing, as well as bright pops of color and print. He credits his youth in Santo Domingo for influencing his design asthetic, "My great strength is knowing who I am and where I come from – my island.” While his fall collection featured more neutral colors and an abundance of fur, there were still plenty of patterns. Some of my favorite looks:

Karlie Kloss could make anything look good, but I love the fur topper and patterned coat paired with leather boots. It feels very Dr. Zhivago (read: elegantly beautiful) to me.

I love the feminine details on these two pale-hued dresses. The silhouette of the first is incredibly figure flattering, and the second is very whimsical and fun. Though the styling of the second makes it a bit too "Ice Princess" for my taste, I think it's a lovely party dress.

You can see OdlR's signature love of bright colors and prints in this gorgeous gown. It manages to balance sophistication with an eclectic touch.

I love the detailing of this neckline. Simply beautiful.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

I happened to walk past a fruit stand on the morning of Valentine's Day, and I saw the most beautiful strawberries at an unbelievable price (especially considering the season!). Of course, immediately I knew that in honor of the holiday, I'd put them to good use with the best of counterparts: chocolate.

First, I washed and patted the strawberries dry. Use a paper towel to make sure the berries are completely dry, as excess moisture will prevent the chocolate from sticking.

I don't like the fuss of a double boiler, so I opted to melt the chocolate in the microwave. Be sure to warm the chocolate is small increments, decreasing the time as the chocolate is nearly fully melted. Chocolate burns easily, and there's nothing worse than ruining something so delicious.

I dipped each strawberry in the melted white chocolate, then placed them on a baking pan that I had cooled in the refrigerator. I'd recommend lining it with parchment paper if you have it on hand, as it will make the removal easier.

To decorate, I melted a small amount of dark chocolate in a plastic bag (again in small increments of time), then snipped a small hole in the corner to use as a makeshift pipping bag. The squiggles are the easiest design, but I also played around with letters, hearts, and panda faces.

The final product was delicious. Unsurprisingly, they hardly lasted the day. As soon as my Valentine's Day sugar rush wears off, I'll be on the lookout for more fruit to cover in chocolate. After all, that makes these somewhat healthy... right?

Straw Hats

I'll be honest, when I think of straw hats, I immediately imagine a cowboy hat. Blame it on growing up in a state where people own Stetsons for reasons beyond costume parties...

I've posted before about my love of hats and wish that they would become more common in everyday wear. Plenty of functional hats abound this time of year as they make snowstorms and rough winds slightly more bearable. While chilly weather reminds us that spring is still quite a ways away, I'm already dreaming of warm weather ensembles including hats. I came across this image, and the pale colors immediately set me on a straw hat tangent:

Of course, this immediately made me think of straw boaters and their particular prominence in fashion. Confused? Coco Chanel began her fashion empire not with the LBD, but with straw boaters. Chanel disliked the gaudy, extravagant hats of the turn of the century and trimmed simple straw boaters with ribbon as an alternative. Her hats quickly gained a following (no wonder, who really wants to carry a large, elaborate hat around on their head all day when a chic boater would do?) and Chanel's fashion empire was on its way.

This spring, I think I'll pay a small tribute to the legend that was Chanel and sport a trimmed boater. Of course, wearing it in Paris would be even better...

Now if only it were sunny enough to warrant such toppers. Until then, hats off to you, Coco.

CFDA Challenge: Revisted

Almost two months ago I wrote about the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund final challenge that revolved around creating an Ann Taylor inspired look. While the decision to not produce the looks remains unchanged, the speculation that the originals would be auctioned to benefit the CFDA was correct!

Ten of the designer's looks, including multiple pieces, are up for auction on eBay. If I could afford it, that Billy Reid ensemble would be mine in a heartbeat. Karlie Kloss, per usual, is absolutely stunning in all the looks. I'm hoping there will be similar CFDA collaborations in the future and perhaps actual production of the pieces at lower price points. A girl can dream.

Mastering Marzipan

Rabbit rabbit! I can't believe it's February already. January always seems to fly by, perhaps because after the hustle of the holiday season in sets the exhaustion. By the time we've recovered and garnered the motivation to get back to our old, productive selves, well, the month's over!

Speaking of animals, I saw these adorable elephants on the Metrocurean blog today. As with most things from Dean & Deluca, they'll only be admired from afar. It is nice, however, to see a less typical motif employed for something so Valentine's Day related. As cute as they are, bears with hearts are extremely overdone. Elephants are known for their exceptional memory span and I'm a big fan of Dean & Deluca's urge to "let someone special know that—like an elephant—you'll never forget them." It's a fresh and witty take on the holiday.

Until then, it looks like I'll have to add "mastering marzipan" to my bucket list.

Loving: Anna Bond Stationery

When it comes to stationery, I could spend hours fawning over beautiful paper and coordinating envelopes. I'm currently smitten with Anna Bond's whimsical Valentine's Day cards. I couldn't agree more with Rifle Paper Co.'s, the brand started by Anna and her husband Nathan, philosophy on stationery:

Chicken, Onion, and Balsamic Pear Tarts

When I saw Real Simple's recipe for Flaky Mushroom and Gruyère Tarts in their January 2011 issue, I marveled at life's little coincidences. I had just bought puff pastry the week before (it was on sale, and I couldn't resist. Food sales are even worse than clothing ones for me, because I know I'll find a use for the product), and this seemed like the perfect use.

I ended up altering the recipe quite a bit, because my dinner companion is not a mushroom fan. Instead, we subbed onions for the mushrooms, threw in garlic for flavor, and added chicken on a whim. When I couldn't find gruyère at the store, we used a mild white cheddar. The pears and balsamic were the last addition to balance the flavor of the garlic and chicken. The result was a delicious flaky tart with the perfect combination of savory and sweet toppings. I'll definitely be making this in the future.

Ingredients:

1 sheet puff pastry
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 medium white onion, diced
200 g chicken breast, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup grated white cheddar
1/2 pear, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Directions:

Heat oven to 400° F (220°C). Unfold the pastry and cut it into 4 squares. Place the squares on a lightly oiled baking sheet and, using a fork, prick the dough all over.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, cook lightly, and then add the chicken. Cook, turning occasionally, until the chicken is lightly browned. Add the onions and cook until soft.
Dividing evenly, sprinkle the pastry squares with half the cheese, leaving a ½-inch border on each. Top with the chicken and onion mixture, pear slices, and remaining cheese. Drizzle with the balsamic vinegar. Bake until the pastry is golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

This image is from Louis Vuitton's Resort 2011 ad campaign featuring Anne Vyalitsyna and shot by Mark Segal. I love the slight "Pink Ladies" vibe of this image. Though I'm not likely to wear head to toe pink (except notably, on Valentine's Day), I love the styling of the full skirt with casual tee and draped jacket. Now if only I had a car like that in which to lounge around...

This or That: Peppermint Ice Cream

I've always thought it a shame that peppermint ice cream is largely a seasonal flavor. When I was younger, I begged my mom to stock the freezer with as many tubs as possible, only to be disappointed come February when the last of the supply was diminished. To this day, my obsession with seasonal ice cream flavors (pumpkin around Thanksgiving, etc.) continues to amuse my friends. In honor of my favorite winter flavor:

Presented Like a Present

When it comes to Christmas gifts, I think packaging is just as important as the contents. That's not to say that it is more important, as obviously an intricately wrapped empty box is just that - an empty box. However, I do think that the little extra thought that goes into picking a lovely paper and coordinating ribbon and creating a personalized tag really adds a nice element to the gift.

With shopping in full swing, I've had bows and ribbons on the mind. When I came across this image, I instantly was smitten. The delicate bow and coordinating nail polish come together to form a beautiful picture.

While it would be pretty simple to whip up a version with a little ribbon and an old ring, I like the polish and durability of the following rings as well:

Moleskine Collaborations

What's a Moleskine? From the company's website:

Moleskine is the legendary notebook that has held the inspirations and ideas of everyone from Van Gogh, Picasso and Hemingway to famed author, Bruce Chatwin. Artists, authors, and geniuses of all variety have long appreciated the simplicity and superior functionality of these notebooks.

Moleskine books were originally produced by small French bookbinders. However, In 1986, the last manufacturer of Moleskine, a family operation in Tours, closed and Moleskine production ceased. In 1998, a small Milanese publisher revived the classic book.

I was thrilled when I saw that Moleskine had collaborated on a special set of books to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Pacman. Pacman, and of course Mrs. Pacman and the ghosts, are indispensable pop culture icons instantly recognizable by several generations.

Moleskines are a bit pricey compared to other notebooks, but the quality and design are well worth the expense. The iconic pocket in the back of the book is handy for holding everything from business cards to ticket stubs, and I love the creative feeling I get totting around a notebook for ideas and sketches. With a variety of colors, sizes, and paper, there's a Moleskine for every type.

Sweater Dresses

I have to admit my first reaction to sweater dresses was to balk at their impracticality. After all, if it's cold enough to warrant wearing a sweater, shouldn't you at least wear some proper pants? I'd like to invoke the ignorance of youth as my defense. Moving on, I've grown to love sweater dresses paired with tights and flats or leggings and boots.

This BCBG black sweater dress with a cowl neck is one of my favorite pieces in my closet (and not just because it was a gift from a very special someone). I've experimented with wearing it with tights and bright pink flats, and with boots and a skinny belt. I love how comfortable and easy sweater dresses are, and yet they manage to look effortlessly chic and pulled together.

I was thrilled to find this tutorial for creating a sweater dress from an over-sized men's sweater. Basically, any old sweater can be flipped inside out, pinned to fit, sewn along the new seams, and flipped back to normal. Adjusting the arm holes would be the trickiest part, but if that proves too daunting, the sleeves could be simply shortened and hemmed as the over-sized look is quite current. Now to dust off the sewing machine...

Honey-Ginger Tea

I've been a bit under the weather, which translates into the consumption of copious amounts of TheraFlu. The taste is awful, but if you can chug it down (literally, the label recommends finishing the glass in 10 minutes) the after effects are quite calming.

I've always sworn by warm tea with a touch of honey when sick. Though I usually stick to peppermint or Celestial Seasoning's Sleppytime tea, I've managed to acquire a fair amount of green tea during the semester. I saw this recipe for Honey-Ginger tea that incorporates green tea and had to give it a try. It's rather soothing and perfect for anyone with a cold.

Ingredients

1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled
1 regular-size green tea bag
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons honey
1 cup boiling water

Preparation

Grate ginger, using the large holes of a box grater, to equal 1 Tbsp. Squeeze juice from ginger into a teacup; discard solids.
Place tea bag, lemon juice, and honey in teacup; add boiling water.
Cover and steep 3 minutes. Remove and discard tea bag, squeezing gently.

Chanel's 2011 Resort collect set the fashion and beauty worlds into a frenzy with the pale blue lacquer adorning the model's fingernails.

The color, dubbed Riva, is a limited edition released December 1st. While the polish fit seamlessly into the Resort collection, it is perfectly suited for winter's bitter temperatures as well.

The color reminds me of a frozen pond dotted with graceful skaters as glittering snowflakes swirl down. Overly romantic? Surely. But that's the world of Chanel.

Leather Gloves

As much as I love my convertible mittens (or glittens as my friends refer to them), I felt a little silly wearing them with a business casual outfit. Of course, as it was thirty something degrees outside, not wearing gloves was far from a reasonable option. Instead, the quest begins for a pair of the glitten's slightly classier relative, the leather glove.

Of course, settling on a color may very well take me through the end of winter, rendering the process rather useless. Here are some of my favorites.

I'm currently fixated on plaid. Perhaps it's the cheery red and green scarves that pop up this time of year and the cozy oversized flannels that are in abundance. Some of my favorite plaid pieces:

A classic timepiece.

The secret to wearing plaid is to keep everything else simple. Pick two colors from the pattern to structure the rest of your outfit. Alternatively, take a color from the pattern and add another coordinating/neutral color. May your plaid make you glad ;)

The Basic Shoes

If money were no object, most women would give Imelda Marcos's shoe collection a run for its money. However, many of us live on a budget, and splurging on shoes is not the most practical of activities. As I continue to pare down my wardrobe in preparation for next semester, I've had to ruminate on what constitutes the "essential" shoe collection for a college girl.

Professional Flats
These are indispensible for work, internships, interviews, and the like. Mine are a pair of black, patent leather flats with a rubber sole. I can walk hours in them comfortably, don't worry about slipping on tiled floors, and they go with all sorts of dress pants and skirts.

Sneakers and/or Comfortable Day Shoes
Depending on your activity level, these might be more casual (like Converse) or girly (ballet flats). The idea is this is your daily go-to shoe. These are the sort of shoes you could wear as a tourist; comfort is key. A more casual version is great for class and daytime exploring, while a dressier flat does double duty for dinners and dates.

Dress Shoes
These are your shoes for going out with friends, attending parties, etc. This is your chance to grab a pair of trendier shoes. Since you don't wear them as much, you won't tire of a bright color or interesting material. If you love heels, this is a great spot to incorporate them into your wardrobe, but for those more inclined to wear flats there are plenty of great options.

Flat Boots
These become indispensable in the winter months. A nice pair of riding boots can be worn day and night. Paired with cozy socks, snow storms seem less threatening, and they can also be waterproofed if you're worried about the occasional rainstorm. They look great with tucked in jeans, tights and skirts, and even leggings and a tunic top.

Paris-Byzance

Chanel showed a pre-fall collection with a Paris-Byzance theme. As Lagerfeld explained, the collection was inspired by the Empress Theodora and the lost culture of Byzantium. "Theodora was a circus artist who became empress, like Chanel, who was a little singer and became a fashion empress."

I love the rich, deep colors embellished with bits of gold and lavish embroidery.

The simplicity of both of these looks is beautiful. I love the off center brooch and draping of these two outfits.

The multicolored embroidery coordinates beautifully with the deep teal of these two dresses. I also like the longer hemline.

This brown striped dress looks incredibly cozy and chic. The long gold gloves make it extra elegant. The green coat is equally stylish. I especially like the length of the cuff/arm detail.

What a stunning dress. I love the styling with sandals, but it would look gorgeous with gold strappy heels as well.

Color of the Year

Pantone released 2011's Color of the Year: Honeysuckle.

"In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone.

The Pantone website goes on to suggest ways the color's "bold spirit" might crop up in your everyday life. There's the expected: fashion, home interiors, and wedding accessories. And the less apparent: packaging and a Visa Card.

I love the compilation of designer sketches. Looks like honeysuckle dresses are the thing to wear to spring weddings!

How neat is this book safe? I always wanted to do this as a kid, but the thought of taking an X-acto knife to a favorite novel still saddens me. I suppose a cheap hardback book wouldn't be too difficult to find at a thrift store.

My favorite part: how perfect is the book selection? I love that the title, The Tower Treasure, hints at the surprise hidden within the pages. Very clever.

Salted Caramels

In two short weeks I'll be home for Christmas. I'm already dreaming about the cooking, baking, and candy making that surrounds the holiday in my family. On this year's list: my mom's famous toffee, spritz cookies, peppermint bark, fudge, and peanut butter balls.

A new contender? Salted caramels. I love how easily these can be packaged as a gift or holiday treat. If wrapping them individually in wax paper is too time intensive, they can be bagged in a pretty cellophane bag tied with a large ribbon and decorative tag. If you're feeling extra generous, you can share the recipe on the card as well.

Salted Caramels
Ingredients and Equipment

1 cup heavy cream
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
2 teaspoons sea salt, plus extra for sprinkling on top.
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
8" square baking pan
Parchment paper
Candy thermometer
Wax paper for wrapping or paper candy cups

Directions

Line the bottom and sides of the pan with parchment paper and lightly oil the paper.
Bring the cream, butter and sea salt to a boil in a small saucepan; remove from heat and set aside.
Boil the sugar, corn syrup, and water in a heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil, without stirring but gently swirling pan; then cook without stirring until the mixture reaches 248°F, the firm-ball stage.
Carefully stir in the cream mixture—the mixture will bubble up. Simmer, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. The temperature should not go higher than 250°F.

Tip: To get the caramel consistency you want, test by dropping a spoonful of caramel into a bowl of cold water. It will form a ball, which you can test with your fingers. Stop cooking when the ball is the consistency that you want.

Pour the mixture into the baking pan and cool 2 hours.
Optional: dip the caramels in tempered melted chocolate; sprinkle the top with some grains of sea salt (pretty salts make a difference); or press in some culinary lavender buds.
Cut into 1-inch pieces, then wrap each piece in a 4-inch square of wax paper, folding ends or twisting to close like taffy.

Ski Coat

It's finally starting to feel like winter, by which I mean I nearly managed to get frostbite this weekend. At the last minute I ended up helping out at an outdoor activity (that I knew I wasn't dressed for, but there was no time to change) in thirty degree weather. Not the smartest choice, but I thankfully recovered. The whole time, I kept imagining my warm, double layered ski coat sitting unused at home.

Moral of the story? Don't forget this guy. It may not be the most fashionable of clothing, but when it comes to a day on the slopes, or a few hours in below freezing temperatures, there's nothing I'd rather have than my ski coat.

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream...

When all else fails, find cute pajamas...

Ay, there really is the rub.

It's a fairly well accepted fact that seven to eight hours is the "golden" amount of sleep. That is, too much more or less can be detrimental to one's immediate and future health. According to David Dinges, chief of the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, "Some of us are so used to not getting enough sleep that we've forgotten what it feels like to be fully alert."

I couldn't agree more ardently with that statement. On this chuckle-worthy list of "32 Undeniable Truths for Mature Humans", number nine reads "I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired."

Is there any hope? Fortunately, yes. Our brains, always looking out for our well being, have a mechanism that allows us to sleep deeply when we're most in need. The amount of "recovery sleep" recharged depends on how much sleep you've lost. While a full eight hours after a week of squeaking by on five to six hours a night won't do much, ten hours is enough to get you almost back to normal. The study warned against carrying a "sleep debt" as well. Bottom line: It's alright to skimp every once in a while on sleep (nothing a recovery night or two can't fix), but persistent sleep deprivation is rather harmful.

The article's suggestions for actually getting eight hours? "If you think you're just too busy to get the requisite amount of slumber, try removing all electronic media devices—BlackBerry, TV, computer—from your bedroom. These distractions, says Dinges, are a prime reason many of us turn out the lights an hour or two later than we originally intended." Bad news for those of us who rely on cell phone alarms clocks... Rest easy!

Apple Cider

One of my favorite wintertime drinks is apple cider. What's the difference between apple juice and apple cider? Juice is filtered to remove solid matter, like seeds and skin, whereas cider retains its cloudy appearance due to their inclusion. From a nutritional standpoint, the two have nearly the same amount of calories, fiber, and sugar. I enjoy the stronger flavor of cider, but both are delicious.

Hot Spiced Cider Recipe (from Southern Living)

Ingredients

2 quarts apple cider
1/2 cup molasses
4 lemon slices, cut in half
12 whole cloves
2 (2-inch) cinnamon sticks
1/4 cup lemon juice
Garnishes: cinnamon sticks, lemon wedges, whole cloves

Preparation

Bring cider and next 4 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally; reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes.
Remove cinnamon sticks and cloves with a slotted spoon; stir in lemon juice. Garnish, if desired.

Ann Taylor Challenge

Billy Reid

Each of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists completed in a series of challenges to win the prestigious prize. In one challenge, the designers were given a box of images from Ann Taylor campaigns from the ’50s, when the brand launched, to today. Each finalist was asked to create a look that would "set the next major career style trend.”

Loden Dager

The designers had to balance an accessible price point (Prabal Gurung had to forego hand stitching and pleating) with the spirit of the line. The winning designer Billy Reid's look is perhaps my favorite. In addition to an amazing pair of pants that are career chic, he created a genius trench coat with - get this - a lining that when removed becomes a bubble hemmed shift dress. I love the pastel aqua and blush colors of the Loden Dager set and the amazing movement of the Gregory Parkinson dress as well. Unfortunately the designs were just part of the contest and will not be going into production, although the originals will possibly be auctioned to benefit the CFDA.

This or That: Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was a prominent American pop artist. He was born on 27th October 1923, and later died on 29th September 1997. He was inspired by popular advertising and comic books, which played a profound role in the formation of his widely recognized style. In 1961 Lichtenstein began creating paintings using cartoon images and techniques derived from the appearance of commercial printing. His work reflects consumerism and served as a parody of modern life. Lichtenstein's most popular piece of work is "Whaam", which is featured in the Tate Modern art galley in London, England.

The Fashion Police

Senator Charles Schumer recently introduced the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act (S.3728), supported by the CFDA and the AAFA, which was passed unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

The bill would give copyright protection to clothing designs. This is big news for The Council of Fashion Designers of America, a group that has been fighting the effects of the knockoff industry.

Of course, the political junkie in me doubts the legislation will get passed before the 111th Congress adjourns. The bill still needs to pass the Senate, weave its way through the House Judiciary Committee, and be placed on the House calendar. This of course, assumes the two versions are identical. Failing that, the House version (H.R.2196) would go back to the Senate for approval... it's all part of the political system.

The bill is a reflection of the complicated debated over designer's intellectual property rights. The legislation extends copyright protection to fashion designs (including clothing, handbags, duffel bags, tote bags, belts, and eyeglass frames). Interestingly, the protection of the design extends only 3 years. It is also not considered infringement if a similar design is made without knowledge of the protected design.

So how does one determine if a design is copied? The bill lists two standards:

1. The design is substantially identical in overall visual appearance to, and as to the original elements of, a protected design.

2. The design is not the result of independent creation.

It will be interesting to see if this legislation becomes law and whether it will actually decrease the hurdles designers currently face when attempting to protect their designs.

Pucker Up

When it comes to classic makeup, red lips are one of the first beauty practices to come to mind. According to researchers at Manchester University, lips are naturally the most eye-catching area of the face.

"...scientists at Manchester University used eye-tracking software to show that in the ten seconds after meeting a lady for the first time, the average chap will spend more than half that time looking at her mouth."

Regardless of the actual shape of the lips (thin or a fuller pout), the study revealed that those who wore red lipstick were perceived as more attractive. It seems so deceptively simple that a color alone can influence attractiveness.

I've always been a bit wary of red lipstick because I feel it's too dressy for everyday wear. However, a sheer red is still flattering and a great way to ease into a bolder shade. Sperry Ladyfish Boots

Yesterday's shopping quest began with a search for a multipurpose pair of leather boots and ended with something far different. I admittedly didn't notice these boots at first glance, but passing by them a second time, I knew I had to at least try them on.

Once they were on my feet with tucked in jeans, I absolutely fell in love. While the Sperry brand is incredibly popular, these shoes are so unique that I doubt I'll see anyone else wearing them. They are unbelievably comfortable, and now that they're waterproofed, ready for all occasions. I'm already envisioning them with skinny jeans, a long-sleeved tee, and giant scarf. I have a feeling these are about to become my new cold weather staple.

Window Shopping Season

Today I got in a bit of post-Thanksgiving shopping (I'm not a fan of crowds, so I waited until the Black Friday hubbub had died down). More on those purchases tomorrow, but in the meantime, I wanted to highlight one of my favorite aspects of the holiday season: window displays!

Macy's has adopted "Believe" as this year's theme. While the displays aren't entirely original, they still are cute and seasonally cheery.

Bergdorf Goodman invokes the luxury and adventure of travels in many of their window displays. I love the vintage feel of the maps and trunks.

I love Barney's "Have a Foodie Holiday" theme. After all, the food is one of my favorite parts of the season. I could do without the Snuggies though...

Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cookies

No visit home is complete without a bit of baking. Thanksgiving of course necessitated making four pies Thursday morning, but I also had the chance to do some experimental baking. The latest creation: a peppermint white chocolate chip cookie.

The peppermint was a last minute decision, but is definitely perfect for the upcoming holiday season (yes, now that Thanksgiving has passed it is officially the holiday season). I used Andes Peppermint Chips, but you could also coarsely chop white chocolate peppermint bark (click the image for a recipe). Alternatively, you could also easily use white and milk chocolate chips and add half a teaspoon of peppermint extract to the dough instead. The recipe I used is after the jump. Welcome to holiday baking season!

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 bag Andes peppermint chips
1/2 bag milk chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375° F.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in peppermint and chocolate chips.
Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

When it comes to jewelry, I usually prefer earrings and necklaces to bracelets and rings. I find the latter get in the way of writing, typing, and other manual tasks. That might change, however, as I've currently become obsessed with bangles. Below are a few of my favorites.

Apologies for the short post. It's been a long day after too little sleep and time changes. Oh, and I have to wake up at 5:30 am tomorrow. Yikes.

Minimalism is a huge trend this season, but I think it has more applications to my wardrobe than I thought. Beyond monochrome ensembles and simple accessories, there's nothing quite as rewarding as cleaning out one's closet.

My first task upon arriving home was tackling the mess of clothes in my closet. I'm finally parting with sentimental items that I know I'll never wear again, but feel guilty giving away. Really, if I haven't worn something in two years, chances are, it's just going to continue to gather dust. My goal is to narrow out the "sort of like" pieces so that my closet is a more streamlined set of "like" and "love" items.

Travel Day

Today I'm flying home for Thanksgiving! I'm excited to spend the next few days with the people who love me unconditionally (or are at least forced to). Of course, after losing my luggage on a traumatic school trip in the 8th grade, I've taken extra care to pack essentials in a carry-on. Even though this trip home means I'll have clothing upon arrival, you can never be too careful.

What to bring? The list's not too exhaustive or complicated, just the basics:

Everyday simple makeup: Tinted moisturizer, powder, an eyeliner pencil, beige eyeshadow and mascara. Just enough to look pretty by day, and a little pop of eyeliner for dinners and evening activities.
A scarf: to keep you warm on over air conditioned planes, dress up simple jeans when you realize you brought less clothing than you needed, and to stay cozy in the evening.
Boots: I know many people like to travel in flip flops or slide on shoes, but when the weather is cold, boots are the perfect choice. They're still easy to slip on and off in the security line (no lacing required) and they can be worn stylishly with jeans, skirts and tights, dresses, leggings, etc.
Charger cables: I'm lucky and have a large, tech-savvy family. So in the off chance I forget a phone or laptop charger, I'll be okay. Check and double check that you have everything, ideally right after you charge everything before your departure.
Wallet with necessary IDs, credit cards, emergency cash, etc.
Hairbrush and lots and lots of extra hair ties: because there's nothing worse than wanting to put your hair up when it's getting in the way, and not being able to.
Clothes, obviously. But that's a whole different can of worms...

If I ever find myself in Milan, I'm visiting Viale Monte Grappa 12. The main attraction is the site of the old train station which has been reinterpreted by the creative genius of Moschino to become Maison Moschino.

Life is a Bed of Roses

The 65 room hotel is described as a "visionary and contemporary fairy tale." The rooms have surreal themes from the Alice in Wonderland themed "Alice's Room" to the whimsical "Luxurious Attic".

Sleeping in a Ballgown

My personal favorite is the "Sleeping in a Ballgown" room. I love the playfulness of the giant ballgown headboard, and the luxurious cream color. There's no better way to drift off to sleep than feeling like you've just returned from a fairy tale ball.

Even the hotel's website is inspiring. There's a short movie clip that shows off the fantastic decor and luxury that epitomizes the Moschino brand. Maison Moschino's not just a hotel, but an exemplary example of creative design.

Brownies... in a Muffin Pan

Today I decided to bake as a study break. I wanted to make brownies, but with the portability of cupcakes. Solution? Baking brownie batter in a muffin tin. It turned out better than I expected.

I halved the recommended baking time and checked at two minute intervals until the brownies were finished. I liked how easy it was to take the brownies out of the pan (sometimes cutting them evenly without crumbling the pieces is a pain). Plus, the wrappers made it easy to share the final product. I think I'll be doing this often in the future.

How gorgeous are these cupcake wrappers? I'm not sure that you can bake cupcakes in them... it looks like they're wrapped around the final product as part of the presentation. I love all things lace-like, and these wrappers would be a dainty addition to a birthday celebration or springtime fete. Happy baking!

It's no secret yellow is my favorite color. It's full of light and energy, and can brighten up any ensemble. While the yellow rain jacket and boots are classics, I think yellow outwear can be interpreted more broadly to include all styles of this cheery hue.

When it comes to toggled coats, this JCrew version is stunning. Unfortunately, so is the $495 price tag.

On the wallet friendlier side of the spectrum, this Old Navy coat is adorable (and $69.50)

This JCrew take on a peacoat is divine. I love detailed construction in the princess seaming and waistband ($245).

I love the brightness of this shade of yellow and the shiny buttons (Apt. 9, $120).

If you're unsure about wearing yellow all the time, a less expensive version, like this BP coat for $68, is the answer.

I think it would be nearly impossible to sport such a sunny piece and be gloomy, even in the chilliest weather.

Oxfords

No, not the school, the shoe. I've been eying this trend for a while now, and I came across what might be the deciding factor.

The Wanted Belfast Oxford. I love the rich color, delicate perforations, and dainty bow. The ribbon balances the masculinity of the trend and keeps the shoes from looking too serious. I have trouble picturing some oxfords with dresses and skirts, but the bow and small heel of this pair are very versatile. Plus, at this price, they're practically a steal. The only thing I'm worried about is the comfort of these shoes. Unless I wore bulky socks, they'd probably be rather tough and uncomfortable. Perhaps with a little wear they'd loosen up.

If not, they're beautiful just to look at...

I Heart It

The internet is a consortium of so many beautiful, creative things. I'm a very visual person, and keeping track of inspiring pictures I saw online was a complicated process. Then I discovered we heart it. The site allows you to keep a virtual scrapbook of pictures by handily clicking a button added to your internet browser's bar. The album can then be easily accessed through the we heart it website.

My favorite part, however, is the continuous stream of pictures other users "heart" that appears on the main page of the website. Sometimes I see a distinctive photo someone else has found that I immediately "heart". The glimpse into the inspirational storyboards of others is so fascinating. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I came across tonight.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate

There are few foods as comforting as peanut butter and chocolate. When combined into a decadent truffle, well, it's difficult not to eat the entire batch. This recipe by Anne Thorton is a sweet display of affection for someone special or a nice holiday treat.

Directions

Combine sugar, butter, peanut butter, vanilla, and salt in a bowl and beat well with a hand-held mixer or a wooden spoon. Line a cookie sheet with tin foil or wax paper. Roll the peanut butter mixture into 1-inch balls and transfer to the lined cookie sheet in a single layer. Freeze until firm, about 20 minutes.
Melt milk chocolate in a small heatproof bowl set over a small pot of simmering water, stirring often. Remove pot and bowl together from heat. Take bowl off of heat and allow the chocolate to cool down until it is at about body temperature.
Working with about five peanut butter balls at a time, and keeping the rest in the freezer, insert a toothpick all the way through the center of a ball. Submerge the entire ball into the melted chocolate. Twirl toothpick between your finger and thumb to swirl off excess chocolate and transfer to another lined cookie sheet. Slide out the toothpick, and with a small spoon cover up hole from toothpick with milk chocolate and repeat the chocolate coating process with remaining peanut butter balls and chocolate, reheating chocolate if necessary.
Freeze peanut butter truffles until firm. Melt semisweet chocolate over a small pot of simmering water, stirring often. Remove pot and bowl together from heat, and allow to cool down slightly. With fork drizzle truffles milk chocolate truffles with semisweet chocolate, making lines going up and down and side to side so looks like a grid. Return to freezer until set. Truffles will keep well in a sealed plastic container up to 2 weeks in refrigerator or a month n the freezer. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Short post today, but I wanted to share this very informative tutorial on matching colors from Fashion Bomb Daily. When creating an outfit, use these handy guidelines relating to the color wheel.

Colors directly next to each other (i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other (i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
Colors directly across from each other (i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
Colors that form a T (i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
Colors that form an X (i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)

Neutrals can go with any color on the color wheel. White, black, brown, and denim fall in the category. Happy experimenting!

Mittens!

I'm expecting a snow storm or two when I go home for Thanksgiving (only a few weeks away!). Of course, chilly weather is best braved with warm accessories. Today: mittens!

I'm especially a fan of convertible mittens because they really do provide the best of both worlds. Your fingers are still touching, so they can share heat. But should the need arise for more dexterity, you can simply bear the cold for a few seconds. Also, if you have any touch screen device (phone, iPod, etc), trying to work it with gloves or regular mittens is an exercise in futility.

I really love the print on this Aerie pair. The white might be troublesome to keep clean, but you could easily toss these in the wash.

The unexpected mix of warm colors on this pair from Old Navy would cheer up even the bitterest of cold days.

This Fred Flare pair has such a lovely pink color. Definitely perfect for anyone with a girly side.

Finally, the length of these WINK gloves makes them especially elegant, not to mention extra cozy.
